I’ve just returned from 10 days on the road with the Tradewind. My first destination was a golden anniversary party. Fifty years ago Wally Byam, along with two advance scouts, Dale “Pee Wee” Schwamborn and Nick Charles, led a group of Airstreamers from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo Egypt. Steve Burrows (soldiermedic) hosted a fantastic AIRforums rally to commemorate this event. The Cape to Cairo Rally included a 68 mile round trip with 18 Airstreams from Cape Girardeau, MO to Cairo, IL. Our journey began September 11, 2009. Pee Wee Schwamborn was again the advance scout and special guest.
Here’s some photos of the event. Just click on the slide show if you want to see the entire album.
There is nothing quite like looking in your rear view mirror and seeing an endless parade of silver trailers. I don’t think any of us could keep our eyes off that mirror. We traveled to Cairo and Fort Defiance at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, took photos, sight-saw, lunched, socialized, and reveled in the spirit of those who had gone before us seeing more, doing more, and living more. On return to Cape Girardeau, we rallied through the weekend. Sunday had me down for the count with a nasty respiratory virus (many thanks to Amy and Steve for taking care of me), but Monday saw me up and heading to my next destination.
Vive, Wally Byam!
